What's it regarding?

If you have suffered injury, whether physical or psychological, as a result of a crime, you could be entitled to make a criminal injury compensation claim.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme 2012 is a government scheme administered by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (often referenced as ‘the CICA’). The CICA is a government body that operates a compensation scheme for the innocent victims of violent crime in England and Wales. Its primary purpose is to compensate those who have been physically or mentally injured as the victim of criminal violence.

It is the CICA’s role to fully investigate your claim based on the information we provide them. Once they receive your application form, they will request information from the police and any relevant medical authorities. The Scheme is restrictive and compensation will only be paid in limited circumstances.

Some of the most important conditions are outlined below:

  1. The incident must have been reported to the police as soon as was reasonably practicable
  2. You must have cooperated as far as reasonably practicable in bringing your assailant to justice, which means that you must have fully cooperated with the police
  3. Compensation can be reduced or withheld if you have an excessive number of unspent criminal convictions
  4. Any application to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority must be made within 2 years of the date of the incident (however there are exceptions to this rule in certain circumstances)

We can advise that it is still possible to make a claim for compensation even if the perpetrator of the attack is not caught or convicted. A successful application to the CICA is not contingent upon the police arresting and charging your assailant or upon a guilty verdict.
