A recent change to the Intestacy Rules increases the statutory legacy for partners who die without a valid Will (intestate) to £270,000 from £250,000. The change is due to come into force on 6 February 2020.
Under the current Intestacy Rules if the deceased has no children their partner will inherit their entire estate. If the deceased has children, their partner will receive the first £270,000 of their estate as a statutory legacy from 6 February 2020.
It is important to remember that unmarried partners and close friends cannot inherit under the Intestacy Rules. It is therefore important to create a legally valid Will with the assistance of an expert solicitor to ensure that your estate is inherited exactly as you wish.
